MLU (Mean Length of Utterance) is a foundational measure in language sample analysis, giving us insight into a child's linguistic complexity. It's the average number of morphemes per utterance.

One common mistake when calculating MLU by hand is inconsistently applying rules for contractions (e.g., counting "don't" as one morpheme instead of two) or not accounting for mazes or fillers.

For consistent and accurate calculations, a reliable tool can be a huge help. Our free MLU calculator is available to assist you in this process.
